about
About this Track:
It’s Not Up to Me explores the emotion of anger. A “good vibes only” doctrine is dangerous because anger can actually be a positive signal to yourself of what your boundaries and values are. The song alludes to the fight, flight, or freeze stress response and that serving up anger can be warranted (especially when it’s towards a toxic manipulator who is the subject of this track). The choruses support the cathartic healing that anger brings, and the bridge encourages the release of letting it go.
The guitar tone is reminiscent of The Smiths (Fuck you, Morrissey) and The Cure, the drums are disco-y and fun with driving bass in the verses and cool melodic lines in the chorus, and the 80s inspired synth soars over top. It’s Not Up to Me is high energy from start to finish and will help you to dance out that rage!
lyrics
Lyrics:
It’s not up to me to come running to you whenever you’re in distress
At the beck and call of a wrecking ball you make my life a mess.
Not gonna tuck my tail between my legs and run
Not gonna stop and freeze, consider what’s been done.
Let all your demands roll off my back, but then it started to break
Too intertwined, too undermined to see my escape
Not mild or meek, just too tired to speak - twisted words so aimless
To your disbelief it’s not up to me to make you famous.
Not gonna tuck my tail between my legs and run
Not gonna stop and freeze, consider what’s been done.
I’m gonna fight you for the crimes that you have served
Anger’s come along to deliver what’s deserved.
Set the wildfire free it’s confining me
Set the wildfire free it’s defining me
Oo Oo Oo Oo it’s going now
